The Warmth of Silence — Sharing a Michigan Sunset from the Passenger Seat

Resuming my Michigan reflections.

We were heading to his town, with him behind the wheel. The sky, which had displayed a rainbow just moments ago, had faded into a dramatic, multi-layered sunset.

It was a regular weekday. While I was on vacation, he had worked all day before coming to pick me up at my hotel. Taking care of me meant his night would be more hectic than his usual routine.

Yet, there was something incredibly special about sharing the sunset he sees everyday in his ordinary life. He usually drives this road alone, but now, I am sitting next to him. He is busy, yes, but I felt a quiet certainty that he was glad to have me by his side.

I wish I could drive so he could take a break. But even though I got my driver's license in Japan, I don't own a car and never drive. So, the best I can do right now is to keep my eyes glued to the road, trying my hardest to absorb how driving works here in America.

While he drives, I keep quiet so I won't distract him. Yet, there’s no awkwardness in our silence. By looking straight ahead and pretending I’m behind the wheel too, I feel like we are sharing the moment, even without words. Sometimes, I softly stroke his shoulder or take a quick look at his face.

That sunset, shared by the two of us, left a warm glow in my heart.

June at Ebisu Garden Place: Turning the Page Back to My Michigan Journals

Feeling the gentle yet powerful energy of nature this beautiful June, I found myself reflecting on my life here in Japan, realizing it is time to bring one chapter to a peaceful close.

Until now, I have shared glimpses of my daily life in Tokyo on this blog. Moving forward, however, I want to return to what inspired me to start this blog and focus primarily on my beloved Michigan—sharing my travel journals and memories of the places I hold so dear. As for my Tokyo stories, I will only be sharing them once in a very long while.

If you originally visited my blog with the hope of finding Michigan content and found yourself disappointed by other topics mixed in, I am truly sorry. From now on, I am dedicated to filling these pages with stories that truly live up to the name of this blog: Charmed by Michigan.

Early Summer Stroll in Higashi-Gotanda and a Verse for Your Soul

On a bright sunny day in May, I walked this path in Tokyo, surrounded by the city buildings. Moving forward under the lush green leaves filled my heart with hope and energy.

It’s my last day walking around Downtown Birmingham, Michigan. While I’m here, I might as well wander down some streets I didn’t get to explore much this trip.

I understand that for Catholics, All Saints’ Day on November 1 is more important than Halloween on October 31—at least, that’s how Collie sees it. I’ve heard him say time and time again that people get so caught up in Halloween festivities that they forget about the significance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

As a Japanese person, finding myself walking through Birmingham, Michigan feels almost like a miracle. It may seem ordinary while it is happening, but looking back, I realize these moments may never come again. That was why I wanted to save the best photos I was capable of at that time.

The grand and dignified Townsend Hotel became the finale to my strolling.

I felt so fortunate to spend time in Birmingham, Michigan, as a milestone in my journey. Even if I had grown up and lived in Michigan, I don't think I would have had the financial means to live here. For a few days, I lived as if I were a resident of this town, walking freely through the downtown and savoring the beauty of its cafés, architecture, and autumn scenery.  It felt like a dream—

A precious experience I will always treasure.

Charming & Fluffy: The Adorable Magic of Tokyo's Yaezakura

Yaezakura (Double‑Flowered Cherry Blossoms) 

These lush, layered blossoms bring an almost heavenly charm to Tokyo’s streets in late spring…

As the single‑petaled cherry blossoms fade away in late spring, the double‑flowered cherry blossoms begin to open, as if gracefully taking the baton to continue the season’s beauty.

Delicate pink Yaezakura double‑flowered cherry blossoms in full bloom, fluffy petals creating a romantic canopy over a tree‑lined street in Shinagawa, Tokyo.

Some sections along the quiet route are lined with various types of Yaezakura among many other cherry trees along the Meguro River, and it’s the Yaezakura that always puts me in a dreamy mood.

The single‑petaled cherry blossoms have a fragile, fleeting beauty, yet I am especially drawn to Yaezakura with their strong, lively, and adorable charm. Fluffy layers of Yaezakura are so lovely💕

These Yaezakura overflow with adorable fluffiness, yet they feel powerful and uplifting!

Looking from that walkway toward the main avenue, I’m amazed at how such a cute, natural world can coexist with the city.

This season, why not discover the adorable fluffiness of double‑flowered sakura? A leisurely walk under these blossoms is the perfect way to fall in love with Tokyo’s springtime magic.

Cherry Blossoms Seen Through the Glass Hallway at Meguro Gajoen Tokyo

A Painting‑like View of Cherry Blossoms and City Buildings Along Meguro River

Meguro Gajoen Tokyo closed its operations on September 30, 2025, following the expiration of its lease agreement with the property owner. As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding its renewal or reopening. It’s truly regrettable, as the building was adorned with magnificent Japanese paintings and intricate décor throughout, harmoniously integrated with traditional Japanese gardens that showcased the elegance and beauty of Japan.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take any photos when Meguro Gajoen Tokyo was still open, but I took this earlier this week.

The cherry blossom season is often marked by unsettled weather, but whenever it isn’t raining, I try to go outside and enjoy the blossoms. Among the many beautiful spots, the cherry trees along the Meguro River also feel like one of nature’s gifts, offering us a gentle chance to appreciate the subtle beauty of the sakura.

Standing in front of the glass, you can see the entire view, and even look down over the Meguro River.

Although Meguro Gajoen Tokyo has closed its doors for now, I quietly hope that one day the doors will open again, letting us rediscover the beauty that once graced this space.

A Gentle Morning Walk and Café Time in Birmingham, Michigan

After breakfast, I took a walk down some of the streets behind Holiday Inn Express Detroit–Birmingham. It was around 9 a.m. During my stay at the hotel, I wandered through different residential areas of Birmingham. Each time, I found myself captivated by charming homes and stopped to take photos. And here’s the very last house photo from that walk.

I wonder if this is a single-family home. The identical windows line up so neatly that it almost looks like an apartment building. But this is America — and here, in Birmingham, a town of elegant, affluent neighborhoods. So perhaps it is indeed a house. Then again… I can’t really be sure.

And so, I made my way toward Downtown, where the cafés await.

I arrived at PARIS BAGUETTE, eager to experience the morning café scene. There were so many tempting treats that I wanted to try, but I decided to settle for just a cup of coffee — I’m visiting friends this afternoon and didn’t want to be too full. (Besides, I don’t feel like eating more after having a hearty breakfast at the hotel...😅)

**A small, heartwarming moment from a quiet morning at the café.

A baby boy, accompanied by his parents, stared up at me with his big round eyes as they came into the café. He stayed like that for a while, unmoving. A little later, on their way to the exit after what must have been a meal, he looked at me again with the same sincere gaze, turning his whole body toward me. His parents noticed and laughed — and so did I — before gently leading him outside.

Speaking of the hotel tips, it ended up being three dollars by the end of my stay.

For someone like me, who’s used to being thrifty and making smart purchases back in Japan, starting at three dollars felt like a high hurdle (~_~). I began with one dollar, then two... and finally made it to three. But three dollars felt just right for me—or maybe that was my limit. lol

This was my breakfast today at the hotel buffet. Of course, I had a cinnamon roll afterward as well.

I fully enjoyed all the food and drinks (as always =3).

All in all, I had a lovely morning before visiting my friends with Collie in the afternoon. Both the walk and the quiet moments at the café felt like gentle, heartwarming parts of my Michigan days.

Today is Saturday, and I have lunch plans with Collie. So I figured I'd spend the morning strolling around the hotel neighborhood. 

Look at this spot—An ideal porch offers just the right shade from the roof while letting you bask in the sun, doesn't it?

I've walked these Birmingham streets several times, but strolling again feels like a simulated experience of actually living here. If I lived here, morning walks like this would undoubtedly become my daily routine!

Walking down Poppleton Street, one house always catches my eye. With a touch of Tudor style, this house leaves such a memorable impression on me.

As we wander down various streets, Michigan's Birmingham weaves its magic—strolling past these dreamy homes feels just like a tourist attraction.

I spotted a dark red leaf fallen on the ground—perfectly matching my socks! Such a fun little discovery on our Birmingham stroll 🍁🍁🍁

We've come back to that pink house I mentioned here too. ^^

The pink house makes Birmingham feel even more like a picturesque town, doesn't it?

Brief chats with passersby added charm to the walk. After exploring a little farther, we're heading back now. The light has shifted to sparkling sunshine. We can peek at a beautiful house through the dangling branches laden with red berries—it's enchanting!

Look—a black squirrel appears on the sidewalk! These little locals make every step lively, right?

Shall we head back down this tree-lined path? The light is dazzling! Among the green trees, a few are starting to show red and golden leaves. I can't stay here until Michigan's full fall foliage season, still, I'm glad I caught the first hints of it. Soon you'll be in full autumn glory—please remember me.

Homes, Greenery, and Quiet Wonder — A Morning around Poppleton Street, Birmingham

After enjoying my first breakfast at the Holiday Inn, I stepped out for a morning stroll along Poppleton Street. It’s the kind of walk that feels like a tiny adventure — simple, quiet, yet full of small discoveries.

I wanted to walk along Poppleton Street again, to relive the memories it holds in the stillness of the morning. It was a stroll that began around nine thirty that morning.

Birmingham is said to be one of the most desirable places to live in Michigan. I used to walk around here often, admiring the many charming houses along the streets. The sense of peace and the harmony between the greenery and the homes are what make it even more beautiful.

Oh, I remember this house! It really feels as if I’ve slipped back in time. Even while I was far away in Japan, the world of Birmingham has stayed just as lovely as I remember.

This is the house Collie pointed out last evening when we were walking together, saying, “Look, a pink house over there.”  I had planned to come back on my own the next morning to take some photos of it at a slower pace.  

I find myself wondering what stories might be unfolding inside — it really sparks my imagination.

Just off Poppleton Street, I came across another beautiful scene like this. An elegant house, adorned with delicate flowers, stood gracefully behind the veil of rich greenery — such a charming sight.

In this way, the quiet residential streets of Birmingham always bring me a sense of peace and quiet wonder. For me, it’s not the well-known tourist spots that refresh my spirit, but these serene neighborhoods — where nature and everyday life blend together, and where I can see so many beautiful homes unlike any in Japan.

A Quiet Evening Walk Together on Poppleton Street, Birmingham, Michigan

This is probably my seventeenth visit to Michigan. After checking into the hotel in Birmingham that Collie had booked for me(us), he asked me what I'd like to do with the rest of the evening. I suggested that we take a walk together along Poppleton Street.

I’ve been to Birmingham several times before, and it’s one of my favorite places in Michigan. I wanted to walk along this Poppleton Street with Collie—a street I used to stroll often, one that had left a lasting impression on me.

While living in Japan, I try to study English at my own pace and focus on finding happiness in my everyday life in a way that feels true to myself. Spending time alone happily is important and right, but maybe I'm also consciously tying to do that because otherwise, I might start wondering why we live so far apart and begin to feel uncertain. So when I finally come to Michigan and see him in front of me, I feel a quiet pause inside me as I try to adjust my heart to being here again.

On the first day of October, I stepped off the sidewalk onto Poppleton Street to take a photo. Though it was already evening, the sun was still bright, pouring a warm light over the quiet neighborhood.

It was a warm October, and the leaves were just beginning to change color.

The autumn colors were starting to show, glowing softly in the sparkling sunlight.

In no time, I was walking along the nostalgic Poppleton Street with Collie the very day I arrived in Michigan. The hotel was booked for six days, mostly for me; he hadn’t really stayed there. He is currently busy taking care of his mother, visiting her daily to check on her condition, so he doesn’t have much time to spend with me. Even so, I'm truly thankful to have come all the way because I can meet him in person like this, basking in the comfort of his gentle smile.

Tomorrow morning, I will take a walk along this street again on my own. I'd love to experience the morning atmosphere of Poppleton Street too. Just like I do in Japan, I will take some personal time here happily and meaningfully. The time spent with him is a treasure. The time spent alone is also a treasure, made even more meaningful because of him. Because we are connected in our hearts.
